DIY Coffee Honey Sugar Scrub

Just about everywhere you look on the web and blog-o-sphere these days, doctors, nutrition experts and healthy life style gurus are cursing sugar for its evil doing in our bodies.

Here's a great article by Sophie Uliano, a well respected healthy lifestyle guru with fans including Julia Roberts and Oprah Winfrey, on the perils of consuming too much sugar:

While it seems obvious that its beneficial to our health to quit (or significantly reduce) our sugar intake, no one said anything about rubbing it all over our bodies...

Body scrubs are easy to make (often with ingredients right out of your pantry) and are a decadent, spa like treat you can whip up in a heartbeat...and on a budget.

Here's one of my favorites:

Ingredients:

1 cup ground coffee (make sure its caffeinated)
1 cup raw sugar
3 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil
3 Tbsp raw honey (liquid, not solid)
15 drops essential oil*

* Choose any essential oil you like or that's scent mixes well with the coffee. Essential oils of grapefruit, cypress, cedarwood, juniper and clary sage have all been touted for their anti-cellulite properties.

Instructions:

1. Mix all ingredients thoroughly in a clean stainless steel or glass mixing bowl.

2. Adjust your mixture until you reach the right consistency.  It should be thick, creamy yet spreadable (not too runny).  If your mixture is too thick, add a tsp of olive oil, too thin add a Tbsp of sugar, and so on.)

3. Scoop into jars with clean metal spoon (mason jars work great) and cap.

4. Enjoy! (Great for use in the shower to remove dry/dead skin before the beach or to prep skin for a spray tan.)

Ingredient Benefits:

Coffee: The caffeine in coffee increases blood flow to your skin and reduces inflammation, redness and cellulite.

Honey: Honey helps hydrate and seal moisture into the skin. Raw honey is also antibacterial, which makes this scrub great for acne prone skin. (Make sure you use raw honey.)

Raw Sugar: The raw sugar exfoliates dead skin cells and encourages growth of new skin cells helping the skin look younger.

Shelf life

Your coffee honey sugar scrub should have a shelf life of about 3 to 6 months if stored in a cool, dry, dark place (refrigerator or cabinet that doesn't get warm).

Bonus use: Body scrubs are simple and inexpensive to make.  Tie a cute ribbon around the cap or create a simple label on your printer.  They make heartfelt handmade birthday, holiday gifts or party favors.
